About the event

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A CHANGE FROM THE PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED EVENT.

The event will consist of an illustrated talk, by Chris Ellmers, entitled 'Shaggy dogs, lifesaving, and myths on the 19th-century tidal Thames.'

Chris' presentation will explore the myth and reality of lifesaving, from drowning, in the dangerous and unpredictable waters of the tidal Thames. The main focus of the talk will be on the role of dogs in this story, rather than that of heroic humans. Using a range of illustrative and documentary sources, this talk will offer a unique insight into a little known element of the Thames story.

Meetings are held in the Jack Petchey Room on the lower ground floor of the museum. We gather from 4.30pm and talks start at 5pm. Please note that the museum closes to the general public at that time so if you arrive after then please enter by…
